May 03: ARL CEO Ian Taylor is awarded Maori Business Leader of the Year at the BNZ Aotearoa New Zealand Maori Business Leaders Awards in Auckland, but has some issues getting the award back home to Dunedin - May 02: ARL coding stalwart Paul Sharp (also a rescue volunteer for Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter) is awarded 'Rescue of the month' by Surf Life Saving New Zealand, for his part in the rescue of 30 Columba College pupils on March 1, 2013.

Building Virtual Worlds

Ever Wondered (TVNZ 7) searches high and low for answers to today's most challenging scientific questions. In an episode featuring New Zealand technology firms on the leading edge of Virtual World graphics, scientist John Watt visits Animation Research Limited in Dunedin. CEO Ian Taylor tells the story of ARL and Virtual Eye, and ARL programmer Geoff Bolton explains the process of developing the ball-tracking software used throughout Channel 9 Sports 'The Ashes 2010' Cricket coverage.

The 140th Open Championship

ARL's Virtual Eye golf team attended the Open Championship on a windswept Royal St Georges this year. During the leadup to the event, HSBC Golf Club (TV3) interviewed ARL/Virtual Eye CEO and sports fan Ian Taylor as he set up to deliver realtime 3D graphics for the BBC's TV coverage. We are shown Virtual Eye spotters on course and Virtual Eye operators during broadcast, while Ian gives an insight into the technology and techniques used to bring virtual Royal St Georges to TV screens around the world.
