Virtual Eye pulls out all the stops for Abu Dhabi
Monday January 22, 2007
Finding cell phone coverage in the corner of a bach in Opotiki so she can arrange a pilot to fly to the UAE wasn’t Karen (Kazza) Shaw’s idea of a good Christmas Holiday but as Virtual Eye’s Golf Operations Manager she knew that the show would go on…and Virtual Eye Golf was part of the show.
A last minute decision by the tournament sponsors meant that Christmas holidays for a number of Virtual Eye staff were disrupted. This had a flow on effect to New Zealand Aerial Mapping who together with our sister company Terralink International commissioned high resolution aerial photography and aerial laser survey data to be collected for Abu Dhabi Golf Club. With each day passing the beginning of European Tour’s production of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship was looming ever larger. It seemed to Kazza that Murphy (of Murphy’s law fame) decided not to take a Christmas break this year as everything that could have gone wrong – from aircraft mechanical failures to the official observer not turning up on the right day – did. At one stage she was even talking, albeit indirectly, to the Crown Prince for permissions to get the data needed!
Despite all of the issues faced and overcome on Kazza’s return to work she was heard to say “It’s just part of the job – no big deal”

It’s not every day that someone from Dunedin is operating computer graphics in Abu Dhabi (UAE), but that’s exactly where Paul Sharp (senior Developer and Director of Animation Research Ltd) was in early March 2006.
ARL has done the same for gliding as we did for yachting in the America’s Cup with the most advanced 3D real time computer graphics the world has ever seen.
ARL has linked up with the PGA Tour’s Shotlink system at the Mercedes Players Championship in Maui to provide the most comprehensive 3D analysis of a golf tournament to date.
