ARL's Virtual Eye golf team turned up at this years US Open at the Oakmont Golf Club and set about making the course look identical for the animated and real broadcast pictures, and also showed both viewers and golfers how to navigate this virtually unplayable golf course. The Virtual Eye team has been covering golf since 1999 but no one can remember a golf course as tough as Oakmont, a course where the best golfers in the world shot from 5 to 20 over par for the tournament.
The US open is always a highlight for the Virtual Eye golf team, and this year the graphics were not only beamed around the world via ESPN satellite coverage, they were shot across the internet on ESPN Webcast, and also to the world famous ESPN sports centre as they analyzed the day’s proceedings.

When Infinity Group approached ARL to produce a 6min promotional film for their latest project, they knew we had the right mix of skills to help them out. Still in proposal stage, The Fiordland Link Experience is a new concept in tourism transport between Queenstown and Milford. The trip itself is an exciting alternative to the current congested drive. After a cruise across lake Whakatipu in an energy efficient Catamaran, purpose-built all-terrain vehicles take back country roads to Kiwi Burn where they connect with an electric monorail system. The monorail travels through to Te Anau Downs where passengers catch the bus for the final leg through the tunnel and into Milford Sound.
Our 'one-stop-shop' approach saw the scenic beauty of the area captured from the air using Peter Thompson and Aeroptics gyro stabilised HDTV helicopter camera system and the stunning footage back on land shot by our very own Graham McArthur (from sister company The Video Factory). The CG animation components were worked on by the team at ARL, working from CAD drawings, maps, sketches and reference material to create photo real imagery, complete with reflections in train and bus windows and wake splashing against the bow of the Cat. The music score, sound design, narration and multiple reproductions for distribution were all produced by The Video Factory. The project came together seamlessly and the result was a stunning film to assist Infinity in their consent and consultation process.
