ARL builds turn-key solutions for data visualisation, be it photo-real graphics of terrain and architecture, fly-overs of planned constructions for resource consent proposals, or animations of biology and mechanics for science and engineering. We have digital terrain modeling expertise in both photogrammetry and lidar. ARL creates custom applications, excelling in real-time animation systems design, development, production and data management. Our graphics can visualise aspects of the Natural World unseen by eye or camera, be it giants in battle kilometers below sea level or cellular activity in the human body. ARL also specializes in 3d Stereoscopics, using our 3D stereo-alignment and spatial adjustment software during post-production, and designing customized projection systems.
In 2020, Queenstown's Underwater World observatory opened a virtual time machine experience called 'Time Tripper', telling the story of how New Zealand (and in particular Queenstown) came to be. Fossils that are millions of years old have been found in the Otago region. ARL was hired to create the vision for Time Tripper, transforming history into a new visual experience. Treespace is an environmental enterprise developed to enable large scale reforestation and ecological restoration, and whose main goal is to restore the natural balance - in 2019 ARL visualised their first project at Mt Dewar.
ARL is known for producing high quality educational resources. In 2017 ARL created several animations for Great Southern Television's documentary 'NZ Wars: The Stories of Ruapekapeka', which highlighted the infamous armed conflict in Northland in 1845 (ARL also created a 360° interactive web app for the online archive of the documentary). In 2021 ARL visualised the history of innovative New Zealand yachts competing for the America's Cup, in one of a series of animations for Taylormade Media's educational website Maatauranga.
Historical Projects
2011 - For client Te Māngai Pāho, 'Tales from the mythologies of Creation, Māui and Aoraki' is an ARL visualisation (originally in stereoscopic 3D) of four Māori mythologies (Creation, Land and Sky, the North Island and the South Island) which screened daily in the 'Waka Māori' pavilion in Auckland during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
2010 - In 'Search and Destroy', using real data gathered from A digital tag (D-tag,) and working closely with a team of marine biologists to ensure an accurate depiction, ARL created a 5 minute animation showing what a Sperm whale actually does when he leaves the surface, including hunting squid.
