Otago Polytechnic Te Pūkenga students Sam and Hudson James-Everton have been working as graphics operators on the recent PGA PLAYERS Championship in Florida. The work experience is part of a new scholarship created specifically by Animation Research Ltd, and helps cover the pair's Master of Applied Science studies.

Animation Research Ltd senior sports producer Angus Reid said the duo’s work had been 'outstanding'. "They have gone from interns to very capable graphics operators in a short space of time. Sam has already taken up some cricket work with us over the summer and Hudson went away in January to the United Arab Emirates, where he covered another golf event."

Otago Polytechnic’s Institute of Sports, Exercise and Health head Hayden Croft said the scholarship provided an opportunity to be trained in aspects of sport animation production, building graphics for courses, loading animations live during sports matches, and setting up and using technology to make it all work.

Spencer Byers, who is completing a Master of Applied Science at Otago Polytechnic - Te Pūkenga, is juggling his studies with exciting roles at Animation Research Ltd and Otago Rugby. Spencer clocked up some serious air points earlier in the year, helping ARL cover major golf tournaments such as the Mexico Open in Vallarta, as well as other PGA Tour events in Washington DC, Dallas and Tulsa.

His role as a graphics operator involved being in constant communication with the director and producer of each show, providing live tracking of shots, ball positions, fly-overs of each hole and much more.
