Exceeding Expectations

30 Jun 2021

Broadcast and media analysis by Nielsen has revealed the AC36 events (ACWS Auckland, PRADA Cup & America’s Cup Match) between November 2020 - March 2021 reached a total global TV and live streaming audience of 941 million people. The 36th America’s Cup screened across 55 major network broadcasters covering 198 territories. The live streaming online via digital channels was live and free in 236 territories across the world.

“We were always very clear in our broadcast and viewership objectives after we won the America’s Cup in Bermuda,” said Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton. "It is great we have achieved, in fact exceeded, our expectations in growing the sport and the event globally, despite the many challenges we faced. Technically we raised the bar with the TV coverage due to our production partnerships with Circle-O, ARL, Igtimi, Shotover, Amis Productions and the whole production crew and commentary team in Auckland."

TV graphics by Animation Research Ltd continued to lead the innovation through the implementation of on water augmented reality graphics which helped to tell the story of the dramatic racing in the AC75’s, as well as providing additional highly effective exposure to the event sponsors. ARL's sports division 'Virtual Eye' provided the graphics package, which also included a live 3D graphical view for broadcast/webcast and a WebGL player on americascup.com.

The AC36 media team also highlighted Virtual Eye's work behind the scenes during the events, with a look at the technical aspects of providing our graphics feeds from the onsite office and a show-and-tell about putting together in-studio Augmented Reality.

Packaging the Science

02 Dec 2020

ARL has been working on a visualisation project with AgResearch and Rural Innovation Lab for almost two years now. Creating plenty of buzz when first showcased at Fieldays last year, the refined version 2 prototype of AgResearch's Hyperfarm tool could be available to a select group of users to trial in 2021.

Hyperfarm uses data collected from farms, scientific research and regulators (such as Environment Canterbury) to model changes. ARL developed software that turns the data into a digital simulation, so farmers can see the effects of their decisions over 15 years in a period of just seconds.
